About Us
The Young Men's Christian Association of the Inner North East of Adelaide (INEA YMCA) is well known within the community of Walkerville and beyond. This much loved community recreation centre is located in the heart of Walkerville, only 5 kilometers from the city of Adelaide. Established in 1956, the Inner North East Adelaide YMCA was originally the RSL Walkerville Boys Club, located on Walkerville Terrace, before becoming a YMCA the following year. The Mothers Club was later formed in 1960.
On May 2nd 1965, the Inner North East Adelaide YMCA moved to the current Smith Street site, and had a new home to operate programs for the community. The first President was the late Gordon Northcott and gymnastics was the centre's main program. In 1985, the centre grew in size with the addition of a purpose built Gymnastics Hall to the front of the building.
Initially a branch of the YMCA of South Australia, the Inner North East Adelaide YMCA is now a full Member Association of the National Council of YMCAs of Australia, with a chartered area covering the following areas:
- Corporation of the Town of Walkerville
- City of Prospect
- City of Norwood, Payneham and St Peters
- One-third the City of Port Adelaide Enfield
The centre administrative structure has a Board of Management headed by the President, Tony Pederick. The centre staff consists of an Executive Officer and Centre Manager, 3 program Co-ordinators, and over 25 program Instructors. Currently, the facilities include a single court sports stadium, three squash courts, cardio room, weights room, three meeting/party rooms, gymnastics hall, kiosk and coffee lounge.
The role of the Inner North East Adelaide YMCA is to provide a community facility offering recreational programs for people of all ages. Current programs include gymnastics, Kindergym, trampolining, cheerleading, group fitness classes, supervised weights training, indoor soccer, birthday parties and vacation care.
